Alpomi's Weekly Marketing · Issue 1 · Week of 21 July 2026

Welcome to the first issue of Alpomi's Weekly Marketing—the first of many weekly roundups for UK Shopify DTC brands who live in Ads Manager on Monday and in finance on Friday. We are not here to recap press releases. We track what changed on Meta and Google, what it costs in pounds, and what we would actually do in the account before the next board slide.

If the last few months felt like platforms were moving faster than your dashboards, you are not imagining it. Below is the compressed story from May through July 2026—the context this week lands in—before we zoom in on the invoice line item nobody optimises for.

TL;DR

  • Meta UK location fee (2%) bills on UK impression delivery from 1 Jul—it does not show in Ads Manager ROAS or CPA (Meta Business Help).
  • Mandatory AI info labels can reject creatives; accounts may keep spending on stale ads while replacements sit in review (Meta AI labels help).
  • Google AI Max: DSA auto-migration slipped to February 2027, but ACA + campaign-level broad match still move in September 2026 (Search Engine Journal).
  • Before Friday: reconcile Meta invoice vs Ads Manager, audit AI creatives, list DSA/broad/ACA campaigns for September.

The last few months: what UK DTC paid media actually lived through

Google rewrote Search—twice, on different clocks

April–May 2026 was the AI Max push. Google moved AI Max for Search out of beta and told advertisers Dynamic Search Ads (DSA) and legacy broad setups would eventually fold into AI-driven Search. Marketing Dive quoted Google’s claim of roughly 7% more conversions or conversion value when the full AI Max feature set is applied versus legacy search-term matching—not a number we would scale on without a parallel test, but a signal of how hard Google is steering spend.

Then June 11 brought the partial reprieve. Google Ads Liaison Ginny Marvin confirmed DSA auto-migration would slip from September 2026 to February 2027 so teams would not restructure accounts mid-Q4. Search Engine Journal and PPC Land both stressed the nuance advertisers miss: two migration clocks are running. DSA got more runway; Automatically Created Assets (ACA) and campaign-level broad match are still on the September 2026 timeline (Digital Applied’s breakdown is the clearest explainer we have seen).

June 15 also restored the ability to create and edit DSA campaigns after a earlier curtailing—useful if you need a controlled test before January 2027, when new DSA creation ends permanently per trade reporting.

For UK brands still defaulting to revenue ROAS in Search, this is the structural question: will your account in October look like your account today? If prospecting leans on DSA, broad match, or ACA, July and August are audit months—not “we’ll fix it in Q4.” Pair that with how to connect Shopify, Meta, and Google in one dashboard so Google “improvements” do not hide beside a Meta invoice creep.

Meta: measurement shifts, then billing shifts

Meta’s June 15 measurement change—legacy reach and impression metrics giving way to Media Views and Viewers—did not make front-page news, but it broke week-on-week compare in a lot of exported reports. Operators who still email CSVs to finance felt it first: the column names changed while the story in Ads Manager looked familiar.

July 1 was louder in the bank account. Meta’s location-based fees went live for ads delivered to audiences in the UK (2%), France, Italy, and Spain (3%), and Austria and Türkiye (5%). Reuters framed it alongside Google and Amazon passing through Digital Services Tax costs—Meta had absorbed UK DST since 2020, Ayko notes, and now passes the charge to advertisers delivering impressions in those countries.

The fee is based on where the ad is shown, not where your business is registered (Meta Business Help). It hits Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp ad formats—including click-to-message paths—and appears as a separate invoice line, not inside your daily budget cap (Digital Applied’s July guide).

That matters because Meta’s ROAS metric is still spend divided by attributed purchase value inside Meta’s attribution windows. It was never profit ROAS. Now it is not even complete cash ROAS for UK delivery unless you add the location fee on top.

Organic posts began carrying AI disclosure labels in May 2026; July extended mandatory AI info treatment to ads using Meta’s generative tools (Background Generation, Image Generation, Add Animation) and to many third-party assets with C2PA metadata (Meta help, Coinis’s 2026 advertiser guide).

The operational risk for DTC is not the label text beside Sponsored. It is rejection, delay, and mid-flight flags while old creatives keep spending. Teams running UGC-style AI refreshes need a pipeline the weekly media meeting can see—not a policy PDF buried in legal.

The macro story you already felt: ads expensive, ROAS flat

None of this landed in a vacuum. CPM pressure, promo-heavy calendars, and thinner contribution margins were already the backdrop—we wrote about why ecommerce ads got more expensive and less effective in 2026 when operators were arguing about MER while finance asked about cash. Common Thread Collective’s MER framework remains the honest whole-store efficiency check; it still ignores margin unless you bolt profit on.

If three tabs still disagree on ROAS, start with why Meta, Google, and Shopify never match. If platform ROAS is your scale trigger, read true ROAS on Shopify before you defend prospecting in the Monday review.

July’s changes mostly lived in billing and policy—not in the ROAS column your team watches daily.

This week: why ROAS held but the invoice moved

We have seen this pattern three times in July alone in operator threads: Ads Manager still prints the same ROAS band. Same CPA. Same “scale candidate” ad sets in green. Then someone opens the Meta invoice and asks the question that does not have a column in any platform UI: why did we spend more?

July did not deliver a dramatic CPM spike headline. No single outage owned the week. Instead, the platforms moved the furniture—billing, labels, recommendation tabs—while the metrics most teams optimise on stayed still. That is the worst kind of platform change for UK Shopify brands. It looks like stability until cash disagrees.

Meta: the 2% line item finance sees but media buyers don’t

For UK impression delivery, the location fee is 2% from 1 July 2026 per Meta Business Help. The charge is not carved out of your daily budget cap. It does not depress ROAS or inflate CPA inside Ads Manager. It shows up on the invoice as a separate charge.

Worked example (illustrative): a UK supplement brand spending £10,000/month on UK Meta delivery at a reported 3.0x revenue ROAS sees roughly £200/month in location fees before anyone changes a bid. Against £30,000 attributed revenue, that is only ~0.67% of attributed sales—easy to dismiss until you stack payment fees, subsidised shipping, and a hero SKU running 15% off.

Finance should model Meta as spend + location fee + payment fees + returns allowance against Shopify contribution margin—not platform purchase value. Export invoice and Ads Manager spend together this week; name the gap in the meeting even if it is “only” £200.

Meta: AI labels are a creative throughput problem

Meta auto-applies labels on generative edits inside Ads Manager and uses C2PA detection on uploads from tools like Photoshop, Firefly, and Canva (Coinis). Photorealistic AI people can show a label beside Sponsored, not buried in “About this ad.”

Walk live ads for anything AI-assisted. Someone owns approval—not “we’ll fix it when policy flags it.” The account will not pause while replacements queue.

Google: September is still coming for part of your account

July 22 brought Google Ads API v25—lifecycle goal migrations for API users, YouTube Shorts engagement fields, and the usual spring cleaning of deprecated resources.

For UI operators, two items matter:

Missed Opportunities left Labs and landed in the main Recommendations tab—more accounts, more auto-apply surface area. Audit recommendation auto-apply before a quiet Tuesday changes something you did not mean to enable.

AI Max for campaigns on ACA and campaign-level broad match is still pointed at September 2026 even while DSA auto-migration slid to February 2027 (Search Engine Journal). Pull the list of campaigns that hit those settings. September is close enough that “we’ll revisit in Q4” is how accounts get restructured without you in the room.

The number we keep coming back to

Same ROAS story, different cost story — illustrative UK week
What Ads Manager showsWhat finance should model
£10,000 Meta spend£10,000 + ~£200 UK location fee
3.0x revenue ROAS3.0x on platform purchase value only
“Scale” ad sets in greenProfit ROAS unknown without COGS + fees
Invoice “surprise”Predictable if fee is in the model

We are not arguing every UK brand should cut Meta because of 2%. We are arguing “ROAS held” became an incomplete sentence in July. Gate scale on contribution margin ROAS inside a unified dashboard—not platform purchase value alone.

What’s coming up: what to watch and what we’ll cover next

August 2026 — invoice truth month. First full billing cycles with UK location fees in the wild. Compare Meta Business Suite invoices to Ads Manager exports weekly; if you use an attribution SaaS, confirm whether it models fees or only spend (best Shopify attribution software for UK DTC (2026) is the evaluation frame we use).

September 2026 — the ACA / broad match clock. Google’s unchanged deadline for Automatically Created Assets and campaign-level broad match moving to AI Max (Digital Applied). Expect more inbox noise from Google as August ends. Issue 2 of this column will be a UK Search September checklist: what to test in AI Max before auto-migration, how to read search terms reports after Google’s AI Max reporting doc updates (PPC Land), and when profit ROAS should veto scale.

Late 2026 — DSA runway, not DSA forever. New DSA creation ends January 2027; remaining DSA campaigns auto-migrate from February 2027 (Soku timeline). If DSA still carries prospecting volume for you, the parallel test window is now—not January panic.

Ongoing — AI creative compliance. Meta and Google are both tightening AI transparency for commercial content. Rejection rates and review latency are a leading indicator worth tracking in your weekly stand-up alongside CPM and match rate.

In Alpomi's Weekly Marketing going forward: each Thursday we will ship one hook headline, a TL;DR you can forward to finance, the week’s platform moves in pounds, three actions before Friday, and a tease for the next issue. Evergreen depth stays in the Shopify DTC hub—profit ROAS, tab reconciliation, stack wiring. This column is the news layer on top.

If you only do three things before Friday

Reconcile Meta invoice to Ads Manager export for July UK delivery. Prove finance and media share one definition of spend—even if the gap is only £200.

Walk the creative pipeline for AI-assisted assets in live ads. Labels are automatic; rejections are the operational risk.

Pull Google campaigns on ACA, broad match, or DSA and mark which deadline applies (September vs February 2027). Different clock, different playbook.

Longer reads if this week resurfaced the ROAS trust problem: GMV pricing traps, Shopify ads integration hub, and flat-priced analytics if you are renegotiating attribution tools this quarter.

Quick answers

Does the UK Meta location fee change ROAS in Ads Manager? No. It is billed separately per Meta Business Help. Model it as extra UK delivery cost.

When did the 2% UK fee start? 1 July 2026 for impressions delivered in the United Kingdom.

Are AI labels hurting performance? The label is disclosure. Rejection and delay hurt performance—stale creatives keep spending while replacements wait.

Did Google delay all AI Max migrations? No. DSA auto-migration moved to February 2027; ACA and campaign-level broad match still target September 2026 per Search Engine Journal.

How should UK DTC track true Meta cost now? Shopify contribution margin ÷ (Meta spend + location fees + payment fees + return allowance). See profit ROAS on Shopify.
